Homeopathy What is Homeopathic Medicine Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine developed by German physician and chemist, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann ( 1755—1843 )Hahnemann found that many substances, when administered to healthy people, could produce symptoms similar to those experienced by sick people. He also found that illnesses could be cured by using small, specially prepared doses of these substances, if prescribed on the basis of similarity of symptoms.Ill-health can result from physical or emotional trauma such as shock, grief, guilt, rigid belief systems etc. Homeopathy brings balance to the organism and returns it to health using carefully selected medicines based on the individual situation of each patient. In the last 200 years, the clinical effectiveness of homeopathy has been clearly established and today homeopathy is used worldwide. It is used in the treatment of chronic illness, acute conditions and minor accidents requiring first aid. How does Homeopathy differ from conventional medicine?Hippocrates ‘ The Father of Medicine’ said there were two laws of healing: The law of Opposites and the Law of Similars. Homeopathy treats the patient using the Law of Similars, orthodox medicine uses the Law of Opposites, eg, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-depressants, etc. Homeopathic treatment strengthens a person’s health acting as a catalyst, stimulating and directing the body’s ability to fight infection as well as resolving any underlying susceptibility to diseaseWhat type of medicine will be given?Homeopathic medicines are derived from plant, animal, mineral and microbiological sources. They are prepared following strict homeopathic pharmaceutical guidelines and can be given as liquid or pills. Since the medicines are very dilute, they are safe and non-toxic when taken as prescribed by a qualified registered homeopathic practitioner.A single dose or repeated doses of medicine may be given. These small amounts of medicine are sufficient to stimulate the body’s healing process. Where illness has developed over a long time, several successive medicines may be needed during the course of weeks, months or years. Are there any side effects ?Healing takes place in different ways and reactions to a medicine vary. Sometimes there is an immediate improvement. Sometimes healing begins with an increased feeling of well being even though symptoms initially remain. In some cases old symptoms recur as part of the healing process. Occasionally there is a temporary worsening of the symptoms prior to an improvement. However there are no toxic side effects from homeopathic medicines. Can Homeopathic medicines be taken with conventional medicines?Homeopathic medicines may be taken in conjunction with conventional drugs without any adverse effects: however, it it recommended that the advice of a registered homeopath be sought regarding this matter.
